Flashback: The JAMS “It’s Grim Up North”

Last night I got jaded with iTunes and instead went rummaging through my crates of CDs. Subconsciously I’m sure I was looking for The KLF’s “Chill Out” album but instead I happened upon The JAMS “It’s Grim Up North”.

Because I’m a cartography nerd (i.e. I like to stare at maps for ages) I love tracks that mention geographical locations. Odd but true. Hence “It’s Grim Up North” is a treasure trove. And as a bonus it was made by my musical heroes Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty. What more could I possibly ask for?

The show: Synth madness in town tonight

If you like synths and fuzzed out cover versions then head along to the Golden Axe “Fantasy Footwork” album release party tonight 9pm at High Street Project. Supported by secrets (aka Fraser Austin) and Dorkwind. $10 on the door.

And happy 29th birthday Benet Hitchcock !!! Let’s hope your birthday party tonight is like the one in the Data “One in a million” video (but without the cake throwing and unhappy ending – good costumes though!)…

Jeff Mills vinyl and CD in one!

Thx: PSFK

Ah. That crazy Jeff Mills. Not content with branching into high end automotive accessories a few years back (with his Axis Road Trip range), DJing in a Barcelona shop window or performing with French orchestras, techno’s renaissance man has created a hybrid disc for The Occurrence with a vinyl pressing on one side and a cd mix on the other.

Sure… it’s a gimmick but it’s a nice gimmick.

Update: Wired reported a similar thing back in November 2007.

And in case you missed them first time round…

The show: Only mildly affected by FIFA sleep deprivation and vuvuzelas

As promised during the show here’s the link to download the King Midas Sound mix from FACT magazine last year.

Whilst we were on the subject of vuvuzelas, test your tolerance here.

The show: Electro overload

Electro overload because I’m doing the show by myself while The Herb Whisperer, in a double whammy, recovers from his retirement party and sleeps in after doing an allnighter watching the first games of the 2010 World Cup.

Gave me a chance get through my backlog of recent acquisitions from Galaxy Records including this 1982 gem from Bill Wyman “(Si, Si) Je Suis un Rock Star”. As someone (not Bill Wyman) recently said, you can’t polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter.

Bill Wyman is apparently mad keen on metal detectors – so much so that he recently released The Bill Wyman Signature Metal Detector.

UPDATE: I forgot to record the show today so there’s no podcast this week. Sorry.
