The Show: The mystery of Scottish sport is why we hate the English so…

Euro 2020 2021 is currently underway and preparation for today’s show coincided with the build up to the England versus Scotland match.

So much to play for! A win for Scotland would surely guarantee secession or independence. And a win for England would surely vindicate Brexiteers everywhere. Or maybe we were being unrealistic. And then we woke up Saturday morning and saw the match end in a 0-0 draw.

However, we will never pass up an excuse to rummage around in the archives and play Primal Scream, Irvine Welsh & On-U Sound’s The Big Man And The Scream Team Meet The Barmy Army Uptown.

And on with the show…

The Show: Some may say that you are only interested in one thing…

A welcome return today from Nick Harte aka Shocking Pinks. His mysterious new MERCEDES CAMBRIDGE project “Adversary” is cinematic, darkly ambient and hypnotically crimecore. It’s the soundtrack for the film that Nicolas Winding Refn was too scared to make. Get it now on Bandcamp and/or get the cassette version via Opal Tapes.

Not to be outdone, after a long hiatus ANIKA aka Annika Henderson is back too. The new album Change is out 23 July 2021. For a wee taste have a listen to Finger Pies…

The Show: I’ll be eating breakfast in the evening, as the world crumbles in May…

More sneaky threesomes on the show today, this time round plundering new albums from LES BAXTERS and PICKLE DARLING. And we do love our synth-pop. So how could we resist MANIFEST KITSUNE‘s “catchy, creepy Lovecraft inspired synthwave live electronic anthem for the surreal year of 2021”? Hint: we couldn’t. And on with the show…

The Show: Hotbox your car…

The tail end of another Christchurch winter has been unseasonably warm, so it’s more than appropriate to be enjoying DRY DIVE‘s ‘in the summer’.

If you’re after something a little more melancholic and suited to a spring day then allow us to recommend CAMERON FINLAY‘s recent release ‘Warm Morning’.

It’s also the welcome return of THE FLYING SORCERERS with their roundup of assorted material recorded since 2011, “The Unrealistic Expectations of The Flying Sorcerers”.

The Show: I won’t get on my knees. Don’t make me do that please…

While researching and putting together the show this week (which involves throwing darts at music maps and scouring Bandcamp for Christchurch and Brisbane music) I stumbled across Hatchie & The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart’s glorious cover of The Jesus & Mary Chain’s “Sometimes Always”.

Proof indeed that the Reid brothers have an uncanny knack for writing perfect pop songs lovingly drenched in honeyed guitar tones. Sadly the pink vinyl 7-inch single has sold out but you can still have a listen below.

I seem also to have stumbled into the trap of playing TV theme tunes, but sometimes you just have to scratch that itch.
