The Joint: Let me in your pub. I’m not looking for trouble, I’m looking for love.

Two weeks ago we made a bold claim that “Summer of Soul” was the best music documentary we’ve seen in years.

“The Sparks Brothers”, directed by Edgar Wright, might run it close though. At 2 hours and 20 minutes long it provides an exhaustive account of the Ron and Russell’s 50 year career.

Here Edgar Wright talks about his life – from child to auteur – in terms of the music he listened to. There’s a heavy debt to 70’s K-Tel and Ronco compilations.

And if you were expecting a Sparks laden playlist on the back of all that you are going to be disappointed. Not a Mael tune in sight. You’ll have to go back to a Joint from 4 years ago instead.

The Show: Dead white men’s notes.

Another week and another music documentary to recommend.

“Sisters With Transistors” charts the (relatively) unheralded female pioneers of electronic music. From Clara Rockmore’s mastery and development of the theremin to the earsplitting drones of Maryanne Amacher, it’s the story of women who wanted to do more than “push around dead white men’s notes”.

It only seemed right and proper to include a couple of tunes from the soundtrack in today’s playlist, to wit: Laurie Spiegel and Space Lady.

All interspersed with excerpts from Chris Addison’s recent Bugle appearance.

The Show: Fruit Salad

Cover versions open and close this week’s show.

We kicked off with Frankie Rose’s (almost) note perfect copy of The Cure’s “A Forest”. Always had a soft spot for the original since seeing it performed on Top Of The Pops with the drummer sitting in front of the group. Revolutionary stuff.

On a more sobering note, this recent take on a 41 year old song would equate to The Cure, back in 1980, covering the likes of Glenn Miller or Gene Autry.

And the Wiggles brought the curtain down by going slightly off-piste with Tame Impala’s “Elephant.” At least we think it’s off-piste. We certainly don’t remember the “fruit salad” refrain in the original song.
