The Way They Were – Video Special #1

As I begin to sort through all the boxes on the floor that have acted as my storage system in post-earthquake Christchurch, it’s time to make some hard choices – should it stay or should it go?

In the case of VHS cassettes the answer seems to be – go, but not before I digitize some of the contents. And then upload them.

So here’s the first in an occasional series of videos that don’t seem to be available elsewhere on the web.

It’s an early 80’s UK Channel 4 programme hosted by Tony Wilson compiling dozens of live music performances and interviews, all culled from So It Goes and other Granada TV programmes that he had hosted a few years earlier.

The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, Iggy Pop, The Fall, Elvis Costello, Blondie, Penetration, Wreckless Eric, Ian Dury, Tom Robinson, Magazine, John Cooper Clarke, XTC and Joy Division, amongst others, are featured. Some of them are making their TV debuts.

The quality can be quite ropey at times (for reasons outside of my control and explained on screen) but enjoy.

Special thanks to the crew at Dangerous Minds, who have already featured the video in one of their posts.

Further fuzzy treats in the coming weeks – the first TV appearance of the Manic Street Preachers and Norman Cook as Fatboy Slim in 1984

The show: Back on the straight and narrow

The Joint is back in action. Cheers!
Fraserhead and The Herb Whisperer

Hard to believe it’s five months since we’ve been on air. Our last show was the Saturday before the February 22 earthquake. Damn nice to be back.

RDU is now running shows from the fabulous RDUnit (a converted horse truck) and for the moment is based at the Colombo Street / Wordsworth Street corner in Sydenham. The RDU programme has been rejigged which means we’re still starting midday on Saturdays but now finishing at 1.30pm. Check the new RDU website for full details of shenanigans.

Great fun rocking an old skool mic too. Which might explain random sound levels. And dropouts. And lack of attention to mixing. Ahem.

And here’s the playlist in full…

And Don’t Forget – Radio Doubles Happiness Levels

As the RDUnit goes live to air it’s only reasonable to point out that the latest scientific research seems to conclusively prove that listening to radio makes you happier.

We’ll gloss over the fact that this particularly survey was carried out by the vested interests of the Radio Advertising Board in the UK and, instead, put the theory to the test later today when The Joint is back on air at Midday NZ time.

So expect a non-stop cavalcade of uptempo pop hits featuring 30 minute Shit & Shine tracks, lives sets from Kylie Minoise and the new single from Your Cunting Daughter Fucks – all designed to “stimulate positive engagement levels within the brain”.

Blue Jam II

Blue Jam 2.
Blue Jam 2

*** Apologies – this should have been broadcast last weekend but our inability to master the fundamentals of e-mail meant it didn’t happen. This, of course, makes The Rapture pun and reference even lamer than it was 7 days ago. ***

The second of two mixes blending excerpts from Chris Morris‘ Blue Jam CD and our favourite earworms of the last couple of months, plus one oldies thrown in for a very good reason.

In case we don’t all make it to the end of the show we thought we should start with “Sister Saviour”, there’s nothing like a bit of Rapture to bookend your day. The Joint does welcome Harold Egbert Camping‘s prediction of today’s events with open arms, a clear conscience and (of course) fresh underwear.

We hope to see you on the other side.
