The Show: The return of Tulip Black

Lady Tulip
Lady Tulip aka Tulip Black, turning things upside down just like Diana Ross.

Her last appearance on The Joint was back in 2009 and today is the return of Lady Tulip. She’s not too pleased either after missing out on tickets to Beyoncé’s three Auckland gigs in October which means she will be playing the darkest, scariest R&B that she can find. Hold tight.

Saturations “Black Circles”

Continuing the impromptu survey of recent Christchurch releases we get to long time favourite of The Joint, the one and only Blair Parkes.

Blair is a one man Christchurch musical heritage (have a peek at his discography) and his latest incarnation is as Saturations, gentle, fuzzy, psychedelic lullabies beautifully crafted in New Brighton by the sea.

If we didn’t know better we’d imagine that Blair runs a special cactus plantation and has supernatural vision allowing him to permanently see purple skies, triple rainbows and flying unicorns.

The new Saturations EP “Black Circles” is gently epic. It’s like being wrapped in a big fluffy duvet and then putting yourself in a big slow motion clothes dryer and setting the dial for 14 minutes. We’ve tried to recreate that feeling many times but this is the closest we’ve got. Available now for $10 on Bandcamp. Have a sneaky listen below.

David Mulcahy “Demos (2013)”

On first listening to David Mulcahy’s latest release “Demos (2013)” the swagger and ballsiness brought to mind an infamous quote from one of my favourite pieces of reportage…

“The Circus-Circus is what the whole hep world would be doing Saturday night if the Nazis had won the war. This is the sixth Reich.”
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hunter S. Thompson

In a parallel universe if the Nazis had indeed won World War 2 then it’s very likely that a young Mark E Smith would have bailed from Manchester and backpacked around the USA eventually hooking up with The Stooges and getting a residency at Circus Circus just in time to entertain Hunter S Thompson.

The closest we will get to the musical fruit of that parallel universe is David Mulcahy and his latest collection of love songs. Have a listen below. But be quick because Mr Mulcahy has a tendency to be more prolific than Prince or Madlib and tends to get rid of the old stuff before you have time to enjoy it.

The Show: Retro-a-go-go

As mentioned at the start of the show, Mike D is the latest artist to be pressganged into making a runway mixtape for a haute couture fashion show. He’s done a freaky mix for Kenzo. [Thx Dangerous Minds]

Speaking of fashion shows, while the Justice “Planisphere” mix for the Dior Homme summer 2009 show is the sweetest of them all, the set that Chromatics did for the Chanel spring/summer 2013 show is super classy.
