Looking back at 2010…

What a crazy year 2010 was. The All Whites were the only unbeaten team at the World Cup, the Christchurch mayoral race was interesting for once, and the September 4 Canterbury earthquake wiped the smiles off our dials (fantastic rolling aftershock this afternoon, by the way).

Oh, and a lot of damn fine music was released.

I wasn’t going to worry about compiling a list of musical favourites and highlights (others have done a more comprehensive job than I ever could – and I prefer continuums rather than compartmentalising things into years) but when I started scribbling down artists and albums and singles I was surprised how long the list got (and I’m sure I’ve overlooked heaps of stuff). In my mind it makes a liar of anyone who says that 2010 was a crap year for music.

So here’s what stood out for moi…

And if you didn’t find that very exciting here’s some respectable peeps with a lot more cred than me sharing their opinions on the year in music…

The Story Of Common People

We’re not usually that fussed when a band reforms, particularly any band whose heyday coincided with the height(?) of the 90’s Brit Pop era, but the news that Pulp were set for a series of comeback concerts did send a shiver of nostalgia down the collective spine of the extended Joint family.

So, in the week that Jarvis re-appeared on the cover of NME, we came across a series of YouTube videos from 2008 that form a one hour BBC 3 documentary entirely devoted to the song “Common People”.

The first of the six clips is posted below and you can find the rest of them here.

If I Were An Animal – the Christchurch online music show

In case you missed it first time round be sure to have a peek at If I Were An Animal – the Christchurch online music show.

The show is produced by three New Zealand Broadcasting students (Libby Dallison, Karl Stanley, and Phillip Gow) for their major project. Because it’s a project the show consists of only has four episodes but it’s quite impressive. Let’s hope they can find the time and energy to make more.

Bands and events featured include: Flip Grater, The Datsuns, the CHARTdisc 4 release party, Cairo Knife Fight, The Eastern, Kids of 88, Sleepy Age, The Unfaithful Ways, Rare Shot Blue, The Dukes, Green Like Go, and Skudderhill.

I guess what spins my wheels is that while I have seen some of these artists live, listened to them on the radio, and read about them in various music publications seeing moving pictures of the artists adds yet another dimension.

Here’s the four episodes…

A Post About Post Dubstep
A Post About Post Dubstep

I now feel comfortable having used the term “Post Dubstep” on yesterday’s show, so I’m retracting the offer to give me a good kicking the next time you see me. The comfort comes from having Paul Morley uttering the same phrase in the introduction to his latest edition of Showing Off.

Within the many multi-media elements that make up this particular episode, which is dedicated to Dubstep, there is an extended interview with Joint favourite Jah Wobble where links are made between brie cheese and Miles Davis.
