The Show: Macrodata Refinement

Starting the show off at a blistering pace with a track from the new Blair Parkes album “over board”, available right now on bandcamp.

You can still listen to the recent Karyn Hay interview with Blair over at the RNZ website, wherein he talks about his favourite local tunes and the seemingly arbitrary, fluid nature of the names of Christchurch suburbs, long a bugbear at The Joint mansions.

Say, say, say, say summat to me

On an unrelated note, we can’t help imagining that Caroline Polachek is attempting a broad Yorkshire accent during at least part of her latest song.

The Show: Remember I was your hippo, I’d wear your heart like a Zippo

First up, let us acknowledge that the misheard lyric meme is tired, dated and had burnt itself out way before memes even existed.

Having said that, we did have cause to stop and stare in wonder at our speakers the other week when we listened to the opening verse of The Weeknd’s “Less Than Zero”. The accompanying  lyric video confirmed that we had misunderstood the words and that the couplet in question wasn’t actually hippo & Zippo but hero & symbol.

Far be it from us to advise Mr. Tesfaye on song writing, but we just can’t help but feel that our take is slightly better.  After all, it does actually rhyme. Plus, no matter what anybody tells us, we still hear a song about semiaquatic mammals and lighters.

The Show: Cleanin’ out our closet

In the absence of any spare time during the holiday season to listen to our usual quota of new tunes, we’ve had to re-examine the songs that didn’t make the playlist cut first time around.

Good job too. How could we have originally overlooked Eris Drew’s attempt to cram 30+ years of classic dance music loops, beats, breaks and samples into one album? Or the post-punk crunch of M(h)aol? Or Lucy Duncombe’s soaring, sweeping voice? Or… or… or…

The Show: So goodbye I’m a-leavin’

RIP Robbie Shakespeare…

Not sure if “Boops (Here To Go)” is the song he’d most want to be remembered for but it’s in today’s playlist because it’s an 80’s cut-n-paste classic here at The Joint HQ.

…RIP Steve Bronski…

We managed to sneak in part of the 12″ version of “Smalltown Boy” to pay our respects. To fully appreciate the continuing relevance of that song we recommend this recent BBC Soul Music podcast.

… and RIP Mike Nesmith

This news came in too late for us to celebrate his life on the show but he was our favourite Monkee, wrote one of our all time favourite tunes * and we happen to be part way through his autobiography.
