Black Estate Sessions Volume 1

black-estate-playlist-20150418The Joint likes to dream of DJ’ing with the greats at crucial moments in pop history. Larry Levan in 70’s NYC. Don Letts‘ punky reggae party at The Roxy. DJ Alfredo at Amnesia on Ibiza in the late eighties.

But at our age when we play out it’s not exactly 20,000 people mashed up in field. More like several dozen punters dining at a vineyard. Less “Sorted For E’s & Whizz“. More “Little Old Wine Drinker Me“. Which is exactly why we were invited to play records at the Black Estate Tasting Room & Eatery last Saturday afternoon.

Many thanks to all for making us feel very welcome and a special mention to Waipara DJ Sylvia for helping out. When we ran out of vinyl after 4 hours she filled in with her Lorde LP. Unfortunately we’d stopped recording the set at this point so it was very much a case of you had to be there. Which means in future years, just like with Levan, Letts and Alfredo, thousands will claim they were.

The Joint. Keeping it real(ly mellow).

The Show: You’re a winner when you beat the game

Near the start of the show I played Red 7‘s “I Lost My Shoes On Acid” (we’ve all been there, haven’t we?). I recently nabbed the track from the fantastic Keytars & Violins blog and thought that the vocal sample was quite familiar. Turned out to be Hugh Masekela’s 1984 hit “Don’t Go Lose It Baby”. A blast from the past, as they say.

And we finished off the show with Pet Shop Boys’ second single “Vocal” off their latest album “Electric”. Have a peek at the video below. It’s made up of footage of what looks like late 80s early 90s raves. Bloody brilliant.

The show: Baby

One for the music nerds out there, the amazing story of Donnie & Joe Emerson. A farmer notices that his sons are really into music so he builds them a studio and they record a lost classic in 1979.

Been listening to Ariel Pink’s new album “Mature Themes” and enjoying his cover of Donnie and Joe Emerson’s 1979 lost classic “Baby”. Apparently it’s been known about for years in record collector circles but I only found out about it recently via The Guardian Music Weekly 8 June 2012 podcast.

Record collectors can now rejoice because Light in The Attic Records is reissuing the “Dreamin’ Wild” album on fresh vinyl.

And here’s what the hype is about. Dig those Christine McVie style vocals…
