The Show: This is the other side, I’m crying

Starting today with one of our favourite Cabaret Voltaire songs “Yashar“, the first of their tunes to use the “70 billion people of Earth, where are they hiding?” Outer Limits sample.

It was later re-purposed for a 90’s electronica compilation, “Happy Land” culminating, this week, in bewilderment for one or two unsuspecting Taylor Swift fans…

The Show: Spearmint gum and neat vodka? YEAH! That’ll be great?!

It has been a long time since we plundered Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! for The Joint’s commercial breaks, so repurposing the “definitely not fake ads for fake products” from Office Hours Live on Tim Heidecker’s YouTube channel seems way overdue.

Let’s go full YouTube wormhole and recommend Are Sounds Electrik, especially when they cut up old film footage to create their own promo videos.

A recent favourite of ours is a 1982 single from Ignatius Jones (in today’s playlist) synced with footage from the 1944 film Don’t Take It To Heart .

Only 38 years passed between the release of the movie and the song but it’s now been more than 40 years since the song came out.

Make of that what you will.

The Show: Fruit Salad

Cover versions open and close this week’s show.

We kicked off with Frankie Rose’s (almost) note perfect copy of The Cure’s “A Forest”. Always had a soft spot for the original since seeing it performed on Top Of The Pops with the drummer sitting in front of the group. Revolutionary stuff.

On a more sobering note, this recent take on a 41 year old song would equate to The Cure, back in 1980, covering the likes of Glenn Miller or Gene Autry.

And the Wiggles brought the curtain down by going slightly off-piste with Tame Impala’s “Elephant.” At least we think it’s off-piste. We certainly don’t remember the “fruit salad” refrain in the original song.
