Free music: St Liquor-ish “The Lick” EP

St Liquor-ish is channelling Magnum PI and he wants to give you his new EP "The Lick" free!!!
St Liquor-ish channels Magnum PI and he wants to give you his new EP "The Lick" free!!!

Jason Fishwick of Bluevibe Studio contacted us last week about the new St Liquor-ish EP “The Lick”.

It’s a free download so we were a bit suspicious at first because free seems too easy. However, we liked the dirty, sifty, sexy Sa-Ra / Outkast / Cameo vibe so much that we played three tracks on the show last Saturday. Definitely one for lovers of porn bass (y’know – the slide down the fretless neck effect).

Even better, how dodgy is the classy publicity shot above???

And here’s the official propaganda…

After 13 long years, 14 studios and a gazillion dollars the highly anticipated first EP from St Liquor-ish, formerly and simultaneously Jellphonic, is ripe. St Liquor-ish’s first solo EP “The Lick” smashes jagged beats with sacred subjects such as sex and hating with subtle undertones of grace and pornography.

The show: Kept on the straight and narrow by Ladyfolk™ guest stars Kebabette and Lady Tulip

Thanks to Kebabette and Lady Tulip for dropping in for a Ladyfolk™ session. No – Ladyfolk™ is not the new Alt-Folk™ nor Feminine-AnCo™ – it just means glamorous tunes, ballsy rock, and no dubstep (because, apparently, ladies don’t like dubstep).

Far too many highlights from their she-lection to mention but Janelle Monae “Sincerely Jane”, Delorean “Big dipper” and Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head “Beard lust” really stood out.

More importantly, I am led to believe that some ladyfolk will be interested in Kebabette and Lady Tulip’s footwear for the show. So without further ado, here’s proof of what they wore…

Apologies: For those listening to the show or podcast, I apologise for the low voice sound levels. I had the mic a bit quiet and forgot to fade down the tracks in all the excitement of playing host to two guests with a fine music selection.

Music licence fees

Not many people know this… but if you play music in what record industry copyright collection body Phonographic Performances New Zealand (PPNZ) defines as a public area then you could be liable to pay a licence fee.

And with record sales revenue falling it seems that PPNZ is aiming to boost those ailing revenues by making sure they collect all the fees they can get their mitts on as well as potentially increase those fees.

According to PPNZ…

Play music in any area that is non-domestic and accessible to the public, or charges for entry? e.g. cafes, bars, restaurants, fitness centres, etc. This includes any music or music videos that are played from a PC, MP3 device, CD player, jukebox, or that is played by a DJ. It excludes radio & TV sets. Play music or radio though your telephone ‘on-hold’ system? Hire out your premises to others who then use it to play music? e.g function & events centres, halls, clubs, etc. If you answered YES to any of the above, you will need a PPNZ Public Performance Licence.

The New Zealand Herald is trying to drum up public interest in the activities of PPNZ through a series of recent articles:

The related NZ Herald poll “Should you have to pay a licence fee to play music in an office or a shop?” has generated a bit of relatively constructive discussion too.

In case you were wondering, here are the PPNZ’s current fees for Public Performance Licences.

Music crimes

Garry Knight of Penny Lane Records rolls his eyes at a dumbass...

Classic record shop robbery news headline gold SHOCKER x 2 !!!

Is this New Zealand’s dumbest criminal? and Dumb robber leaves name, number.

Penny Lane Records getting robbed is crappy. Dave, Garry and the crew are nice peeps. Here’s the blow-by-blow account…

The long-time customer of Penny Lane Records on Colombo St in Sydenham began his bad caper on Friday afternoon. He approached the counter with a copy of Pink Floyd’s classic rock CD The Wall and asked for it to be held for him. He wrote his name and contact details on a sticker, which was placed on the CD.

A minute later, when the store attendant went to help another customer, the man leaned over the counter and opened the till. He grabbed a handful of $10 and $20 notes, pushed past a woman who spotted him, and fled the store.

But maybe this is not as cut and dried as first thought. There are several quite valid possibilities:

  1. The alleged offender was cunning and never ever used his real name in the first place and thus will not be caught.
  2. The alleged offender was jizzing himself upon discovering “The Wall” and couldn’t think straight because of sheer pseudo post-coital excitement and thought the cash in the till was actually fresh tissues.
  3. The alleged offender personally knows Roger Waters and used his Pink Floyd “chops” as a blatant diversionary tactic.
  4. The alleged offender just had really poor taste and peer pressure made him want to buy Pink Floyd “The Wall” otherwise his mates wouldn’t let him join their boy racer gang.

What ever the true reason for the crime, there is NO EXCUSE for Pink Floyd “The Wall”. Either buying it or stealing it or selling it or having it in your possession. In fact Penny Lane should consider themselves lucky not to have been visited by the police for leading this young man astray. Some would consider it entrapment.

We’ll just keep an open mind.
