The Show: Oddball UK Hip Hop

Strange U has a new EP out on Eglo Records consisting of weird, murky, grainy hip hop.

How weird? Well the record label describes it as “rap music never sounding so orthopaedic” and that Strange U are ” invoking the spirts of Oshun, Vishnu, Apollo, Sobek and Jim Henson” in order to “crush Duran Duran rapper with a Dr Claw beer mit”.

For some reason this all makes us hark back to the Infinite Livez’ “Bush Meat”  album from 2004. So to enable you to compare and contrast here are Strange U’s “Klaatu Barada Nikto” and Infinite Livez’ “The Adventures Of The Lactating Man”

(actually it is mainly contrast)

The Show: Lost in music

When I remembered yesterday that Nile Rodgers of Chic had been working on the new Daft Punk album it sent me on a late night YouTube bender digging up lots of classic Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards productions. In 1979 they wrote “Spacer” for French outfit Sheila and Black Devotion. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new Daft Punk album is a retread of “Discovery”. And that would be a very nice thing.

The Show: Lobsters

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the release of the first Derek & Clive record we present “Jump”

Maybe we should have played “The Worst Job” instead, it would have segued nicely into the Squeaky Lobster track.

Still on a Cook & Moore tangent, take advantage of Trunk Records’ ridiculously cheap Bedazzled soundtrack offering – 50p for the full download. Get in while it lasts.

The Show: Really fucking edgy

If you have the fascination / stomach to watch the original Signal 30 short, as described in today’s show, head on over to The Internet Archive.

Otherwise you can make do with the first official video from Public Service Broadcasting, wherein they sample some of the audio and images from the legendary 1959 snuff movie driving safety film.

The (no) Show: Community service beckons

In our defence we never, ever played "Easy Lover".
In our defence we never, ever played “Easy Lover”. Honest.

Unbeknownst to many of our listeners we were recently prosecuted for crimes against DJing. The prosecution was successful and we have decided not to appeal. We’ve been sentenced to community service which means we’re unable to do the show today.

The very good news is that Matt and Dan from Hauswerk are able to fill in for us at short notice so look forward to a whole four hours of house music from 10am till 2pm. Don’t forget to subscribe to the Hauswerk podcast!

Those crimes against DJing, by the way, include, but are not limited to:

  • playing things in one channel;
  • playing things in mono rather stereo;
  • train wreck beat matching (or not beat matching);
  • using dodgy microphone cables;
  • playing sweary stuff right before Molo’s show, and;
  • sharing dirty needles.

If you listen to Hauswerk you will notice that they do not commit these types of crimes. Thank goodness for that.
