The Show: Christchurch Heats Up. We Break Out The Local Stuff.

"The Citizen Kane of its genre" - Mark Kermode
"The Citizen Kane of its genre" - Mark Kermode

Maybe The Herb Whisperer went over the top in his enthusiasm for the film and maybe Mark Kermode is damning the movie with faint praise, but it is still worth watching and it is still the best band movie The Joint has seen.

Well, apart from That’ll Be The Day. And maybe the sequel Stardust. Possibly It Couldn’t Happen Here as well – if we ever get a chance to watch it. Shit. What about Head as well?

Mulchzoid “Gravy Train”

Mulchzoid aka David Mulcahy Esquire was listening to the show last Saturday afternoon and upon hearing us play Ed Muzik’s “EQC Are Looking At My House” felt compelled to indulge in some one-upmanship by letting us know about his track “Gravy Train” from his brand new (free download) album “Neck”.

Turns out that Mulchzoid very kindly sent us a copy of his album a while back but The Herb Whisperer has got the EQC painters in and the album is AWOL somewhere in his house.

Download Mulchzoid’s “Neck” album for yourself. It’s free and legit. And it has some lovely pop numbers like “The Saladeater” (with Neu basslines) and “Punch Drunk Giddy” (with Robert Palmer “Addicted to love” intro action).

Best of all, “Darkness Sublime”, first single off the album, might just be my favourite song of 2011 so far. Sneakily it has two videos, one for the US MTV market and one for the Al Jazeera Middle East market. Both videos are below and I’ll let you figure out which video is designed for which market.

The show: A moral quandary…

The Herb Whisperer is away today so Fraserhead is on his own. Dare he play Kenny Loggins or Phil Collins or Huey Lewis & The News hit singles? Wait and find out.

The Show: Ride Your Zebra To Impress Her

Best opening line of any song this year.

There’s no podcast of today’s show, which is a shame as it’s not everyday we are serenaded live in a horse truck in an earthquake zone with a ukelele version of 99 Luftballons by a lady who hails from the same part of Germany as Nena herself.

The lady strumming and singing live in the RDUnit was Silke Hartung, host of Freak The Sheep, newsreader at 95bFM and first time visitor to Christchurch. We look forward to having the invitation reciprocated, so The Joint can perform live on the Auckland airwaves (Fraserhead on cowbells, The Herb Whisperer on Stylophone Beatbox).

Because of the absence of audio evidence we’re declaring this the greatest show we’ve ever done, safe in the knowledge no-one can prove otherwise.
