The Show: BNE

A recent flying visit to Brisbane by Fraserhead shaped the playlist today. A tight schedule meant he could not get to any gigs or record shopss but scouring Bandcamp later on for Brisbane’s alt, indie, left-field and electronically tinged offerings shed light on quite a vibrant music culture. Think of it as a musical travelogue rather than an exhaustive survey. Thank you also to Mel Echo of Melbourne’s Annual Leaf for recommendations and pointers too.

PS: The above image is a detail of “Borne On The Wind” (2013) by Brisbane born artist Anne Wallace from her Suburban Noir project. The major survey Anne Wallace: Strange ways at QUT Art Museum more than made up for missing out on gigs and record shops.

The Show: How Stock, Aitken & Waterman Wrote “Buffalo Stance”

In all the years we’ve been listening to “Buffalo Stance” we never knew it’s genesis was in a 1987 SAW production for Morgan McVey called “Looking Good Diving”.  Things come more into focus with the “Diving With The Wild Bunch” remix on the 12″, featuring Neneh Cherry herself. It’s no great secret, it’s been blogged about numerous times. Possibly, probably, we don’t pay enough attention. However, the story is now impossible to escape in light of the slew of re-releases of “Raw Like Sushi” on it’s 30th anniversary.
