The Show: Game over

game-over

Greetings friends, family, whānau.

Today is our last show before we head off on an indefinite sabbatical. Other commitments mean we need to take a break for a while.

The Joint first broadcast on RDU way back in July 2001 when the frequency was still 98.3FM. We started out on Sunday afternoons but after a while switched to Saturday afternoons. The reasons are lost in the mists of time.

By our really rough and unscientific calculations we reckon we’ve done 665 shows so far. That makes this final show today episode number 666. Not a shabby effort really. To put that in some completely unrelated context Ryan Giggs made 672 league appearances for Manchester United and David O’Leary made 558 league appearance for Arsenal.

Thank you for all your kind messages via Facebook, Twitter and the RDU text machine. It was a blast.

To paraphrase and plagiarise James Murphy…

Yeah, we lost our edge
The kids came up from behind
We lost our edge to the kids
From France and from London
And from Christchurch
But we were there
We lost our edge to better-looking people
With better ideas and more talent
And they’re actually really, really nice

The Show: RIP Iain Banks (1954 – 2013)

Iain Banks

There are chardonnay socialists. And there are champagne socialists. And there are also vintage champagne socialists. But there are not many single malt socialists.

Iain Banks was one of the latter. His sharp wit, incredible imagination, fierce criticism of Tory ideology, defence of the underdog, unashamed appreciation of Porsche 911s and BMW M5s, and whisky research will be sorely missed.

While I tend to prefer Iain Banks “mainstream” fiction something I love about his science fiction novels, those featuring the utopian civilisation “The Culture”, is the absurd, silly and playful names he gave to the ships’ minds. See a full list on Wikipedia. So as a nerdy tribute to Mr Banks on the show today we got our robot to read out the registry of ships’ names over some nice Boards of Canada backing beats. Hope it didn’t wig you out too much.

Happy 10th birthday Christchurch Art Gallery!!!

To celebrate their tin anniversary you will find some ginormous tin men (huge gnomes) outside the gallery entrance on Worcester Boulevard. There’s also a big marquee set up on the High Street / Tuam Street corner outside C1 with all sort of events happening this weekend to launch Populate! – the tenth-birthday programme of art round the city. Details about the weekend festivities here!

And not to be outdone Christchurch City Libraries have made the Freegal service available to library members. Three free legit MP3 downloads a week from the Sony catalogue! Wonder if they’ve got any Freegal Sharkey?
