The Show: Gimme more Star Wars, gimme open barre chords…

Driving around town yesterday listening to RNZ resulted in multiple earworms and tangled musical threads that needed dealing with. That’s the official explanation for FUN BOY THREE, BANANARAMA, ROXY MUSIC, LL COOL J and a few other cuts from the 60s, 70s and 80s making it on to the show today.

Every track on the show is a highlight, so it feels mean to play favourites, but a tip of the hat to Bill of Human Pleasure Radio for putting us on to Kiwi Jr. In a parallel universe The Cars would have signed to Flying Nun and their offspring would eventually become the house band for a shady sake bar in Toronto. You don’t even have to imagine it, here’s the video…

The Show: Isn’t It Funny How Life Just Carries On?

It’s an annual tradition going all the way back to 2017. Frankie Boyle’s New World Order is broadcast over the Christmas holidays. The Joint then pillages the programme for samples to insert in our first mix of the following year.

WARNING: These samples are devoid of context, particularly that Northern Irish abortion line. For the full context watch the entire show on YouTube while you can.

The Show: Bulbous also tapered? That’s right!

For some bizarre reason I recently got an earworm of Captain Beefheart and The Mascara Snake talking about bulbous things at the start of Trout Mask Replica’s “Pena”, hence today’s show title. Delightful fan video below if you want the whole experience.

Not to be outdone on the freakiness front UNCLE QUENTIN aka Tim “Von Klap” Moore has just released the album Famous For God. One for fans of bent and swinging James Bond soundtracks, The Avalanches, beats and synths. Sneak peek below…

The Show: Gene Krupa – Drummin’ man

There’s a magnificent run of rhymes in the Davis song “Levert” we played today – sutures, computer, luger, Krueger, cougar, tutor, tumour and tuna amongst others – but the one that made us take notice was:

New lease on life learning drum like Gene Krupa

Nice to hear a name check for the drummin’ man.

As a special bonus you can peer behind the curtain at the inner (inane?) workings of The Joint when we forget to turn the microphones off at the 1:41:20 mark. Will these off-air comments prove to be our Rachel Smalley moment? Strain your ears to find out.
