The Show: Record Store Day + 7

On the show today Fraserhead mines a rich vein of Christchurch music from the likes of Yvnalesca, Pinn’d, Haan-808, The Salad Boys and Misfit Mod whilst The Herb Whisperer trawls through the debris of Record Store Day 2013 – The Uncluded (see video below) being the undoubted highlight. Also listen out for new shiz from King Midas Sound, !!!, and Ben La Desh.

No animals were harmed in the making of this video, but some of the animals must have been harmed at some point.

The Show: Lost in music

When I remembered yesterday that Nile Rodgers of Chic had been working on the new Daft Punk album it sent me on a late night YouTube bender digging up lots of classic Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards productions. In 1979 they wrote “Spacer” for French outfit Sheila and Black Devotion. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new Daft Punk album is a retread of “Discovery”. And that would be a very nice thing.

The Way They Were – Video Special #1

As I begin to sort through all the boxes on the floor that have acted as my storage system in post-earthquake Christchurch, it’s time to make some hard choices – should it stay or should it go?

In the case of VHS cassettes the answer seems to be – go, but not before I digitize some of the contents. And then upload them.

So here’s the first in an occasional series of videos that don’t seem to be available elsewhere on the web.

It’s an early 80’s UK Channel 4 programme hosted by Tony Wilson compiling dozens of live music performances and interviews, all culled from So It Goes and other Granada TV programmes that he had hosted a few years earlier.

The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, Iggy Pop, The Fall, Elvis Costello, Blondie, Penetration, Wreckless Eric, Ian Dury, Tom Robinson, Magazine, John Cooper Clarke, XTC and Joy Division, amongst others, are featured. Some of them are making their TV debuts.

The quality can be quite ropey at times (for reasons outside of my control and explained on screen) but enjoy.

Special thanks to the crew at Dangerous Minds, who have already featured the video in one of their posts.

Further fuzzy treats in the coming weeks – the first TV appearance of the Manic Street Preachers and Norman Cook as Fatboy Slim in 1984

The show: Above Tatra bolts of lightning, thunderstorm pounds wildly.

As the 2010 World Cup kicks off next Saturday this could be the last, lucid, cohesive show for a month.

The All Whites play their first match of the tournament against Slovakia. Working on the purely logical basis that a national anthem can act as the twelfth man it seems that Slovakia could run out 2-1 winners. How’s this for staunch lyrics ???

Above Tatra bolts of lightning, thunderstorm pounds wildly.
Let’s stop them brothers, they will be lost, Slovaks will rise alive.
Our Slovakia was in deep sleep until now.
But thunder’s lightning is shaking it to it’s revival.
Slovak national anthem

Though it’s not as hardcore as the Serbian national anthem which mentions Ak-47s, armoured personnel carriers, ultras, and knitting.

Maybe it’s time to drop the nationalism and go for something a bit more lateral? We nominate “Kicker Conspiracy” by The Fall to be played at all international matches.

Alternatively, this is the raw, unpasteurized version of the show in mp3 format. No chapters, pictures or links. Slightly less quality. Otherwise the audio content is the same as the two files above. The choice is yours…..
