The Show: The Lebensraum of popular music

If you enjoyed the opening to today’s show – and who wouldn’t like Whitney Houston’s music being described as tyrannical and capable of crushing every tune in your record collection – the full exchange between Edward George and John Doran is available as a podcast via The Quietus. It is for subscribers only but this one interview is well worth the price of admission.

Meanwhile, battle lines have been drawn within the greater Joint family over the best version of Harry Styles’ “As It Was” – the original, the Arcade Fire cover or Harry performing the tune live at Coachella. Listen to all 3 in the epilogue or watch them below.

And on with the show…

The Show: Farewell 2015

Last show of the year. We’ll be back some time in January. This will give Fraserhead some time to tidy up and organise his elephant’s graveyard of a studio which contains lots of DJ toys that he can’t figure out how to use properly. See evidence below.

The Show: If band stage positions were football formations…

Joel Gion parks the bus.
Joel Gion “parks the bus.” That’s soccerball lingo for packing the defence and smothering attacks from the other team.

…what was The Brian Jonestown Massacre‘s formation last night at The Foundry? 4-2-1? 1-3-2-1? 1-3-3? Was Joel Gion a false nine deliberately distracting us with tambourine trickery. Was Anton Newcombe playing the classic trequartista role but unconventionally orchestrating action from the right flank instead of through the middle? Unconventional minds want to know.
