We pay our respects to a series of compilations so vast and all encompassing they actually merit their own compilation. A classic case of pop eating itself.
Besides the NOW references this week’s show is basically Miss Red, either performing or mixing. Or sometimes both at the same time.
The Trendees – Oamaru’s finest – live and unplugged on The Joint. L to R: Matt Trendee, Eden Trendee and Austen Trendee
It’s been several years in the making but today was the on-air unplugged debut on The Joint of Oamaru’s finest, The Trendees.
Thank you Matt Trendee, Austen Trendee and Eden Trendee for cutting short your yoga workshop on Banks Peninsula and dropping in to answer some questions and playing The Trendees classics And Remember (it’s only a job) and Beach.
Today’s show contained snippets from a flexi-disc that was given away with a December 1982 edition of Smash Hits. The top pop stars of the day (plus The Piranhas‘ Boring Bob Grover) recorded special Christmas greetings for the readers. The idea was Neil Tennant’s, the news editor at the time.
To hear recollections from other writers and editors have a listen to The Word podcast “Remembering Smash Hits” taken from one of this year’s Word In Your Ear events. One anecdote involves heroin, Marilyn, Jimmy Saville, sea cadets, French restaurateurs and a stroppy teenager from Rochdale – all the elements you need for a true Christmas tale.
ABOUT THE JOINT
Hosts THE HERB WHISPERER and FRASERHEAD go all over the shop with an eclectic, left-field, and off-kilter selection of cosmic disco, electro, indie, hip-hop, house, dub, and anything with a motorik vibe, plus the occasional guilty pleasure. If the radio sounds broken chances are it’s the THE JOINT.
