The Show: Heavy Metal Parking Lot

Brand new Shit & Shine with an accompanying video (see above) that uses footage from the 1986 documentary Heavy Metal Parking Lot (see below).

This, in turn, has inspired the Judas Priest links in today’s show. Who knew Rob Halford was so omnipresent on MTV promos and commercials in the mid 80’s (apart from 240 million Americans, that is)? TURBO POWER!

It’s a milestone in the careers of both Donny Osmond and Elton John as they both make their full Joint debuts, independently of each other but in the same unlikeliest of circumstances (hip-hop collaborations).

Plus The Sesh is back courtesy of Clara!.

The Show: Чемпионат мира по футболу 2018 года Россия

All the audio clips in the mix lifted from “Frankie Goes To Russia”.

Direct download: The Joint – 16 June 2018

Footnotes for today’s show:

* Found ourselves humming the riff of the new 1975 song over & over, wondering why it sounded so very familiar. Once we stopped humming we realised that they may have been “inspired” by Joy Division’s “Disorder” and then compressed that riff through the Pro Tools Bumblebee In A Lift Shaft Audio Filter©.

** Finally have a reason to sneak in a tune from the (very much) underground “Love Is A Drag” album from the early 1960’s. A jazz standard sung by a man for a man seems the perfect counterpoint to the startling “there is no homosexuality in Russia, just men who are addicted to sex” comment that precedes it.

The Show: Taite Gallery

Happy birthday Aotearoa. Happy birthday Bob Marley. And most importantly, happy birthday Neil Swiggs, Esq.

Going way back to 1979 in Auckland, New Zealand, legendary music journalist Dylan Taite interviewed legendary rastaman Bob Marley, an interview secured via the well worn journalist’s route of “having a kick-around.”

And here’s the playlist (not quite) in full… we’re missing a few minutes where we played the Melvin van Peebles song. Apologies. That’s what hot weather and power cuts does to broadcasting equipment.
