The Show: Summer of Soul, Winter of Discontent

The start and finish of today’s show mirrors the start and finish of the new “Summer Of Soul” documentary.

Both open with The Chamber Brothers’ “Uptown”  and the climaxes are identical (because we ripped the last 5 minutes directly from the soundtrack).

That ending does feature a snippet from a ripping Sly & The Family Stone performance and some wistful, tearful, bemused and resigned reminiscences as to why the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival was forgotten whilst other (lesser) festivals from the same period stole the limelight.

We’ve not seen a better music documentary for years but don’t just take it from us, watch BBC Radio 5 Live’s Mark Kermode sing it’s praises.

For more of the back story on the festival listen to director Questlove’s interview on NPR’s Fresh Air.

And for those who are counting – that’s two versions of “Gloria” that have made their way onto the The Joint playlist in just over a month. When we gave an outing to the 1979 Umberto Tozzi original 6 weeks ago we didn’t know Angel Olsen was planning to release her own cover in July. You can’t keep a good tune down.

The Show: Some may say that you are only interested in one thing…

A welcome return today from Nick Harte aka Shocking Pinks. His mysterious new MERCEDES CAMBRIDGE project “Adversary” is cinematic, darkly ambient and hypnotically crimecore. It’s the soundtrack for the film that Nicolas Winding Refn was too scared to make. Get it now on Bandcamp and/or get the cassette version via Opal Tapes.

Not to be outdone, after a long hiatus ANIKA aka Annika Henderson is back too. The new album Change is out 23 July 2021. For a wee taste have a listen to Finger Pies…

The Show: Our hearts are full of regret and cholesterol…

Today’s show is woven between readings of the “WAP” lyrics by Ben Shapiro. We’ve not been as moved by a monologue since we first heard Richard Burton reciting Dylan Thomas.

As if that wasn’t dramatic enough, we chose to back Mr Shapiro’s oration with the latest offering from RZA – a brand new US ice cream truck jingle, written to replace the existing “well-known and problematic tune “Turkey in the Straw”.”
