It was 10 years ago yesterday – Part 3

After our third trawl through The Joint audio vaults for previously unpodcasted shows, we present the entire 3 hour show that was first broadcast on 29th September 2007 (as opposed to the heavily edited version that went out on 8k earlier today).

There are constant references to “Myspace” websites and “peer to peer” networks but, quite frankly, we have no recollection of what any of those phrases mean.

The Show: Chase the disco devil!

Apologies (again) for the slightly inferior sound quality this week. A technical glitch meant we had to resort to the back up recording of the show.

Whilst we work on those glitches we pose the question for 2014 – why is Lee “Scratch” Perry not on Twitter???

DJ Butcher aka Deano von Lounge drops in from Osaka, Japan for his regular Christmas vinyl session on The Joint. Lots of soul, dub, reggae moving into some big beats. All vinyl, no talking. Well, little talking.

If you’re ever in Osaka and want to track down nice vinyl then Deano recommends the following places: King Kong, Time Bomb, and Drum & Bass Records. RIP Boon Coon Records.

The Show: Slowly catching up

Like I was saying on the show last week, I’m so far behind on music releases it’s just not funny anymore. I’ve missed some really good stuff over the last year.

However, thanks to Dave Imlay at Galaxy Records I got to have a listen to The Golden Awesome‘s album “Autumn” which was released November 2011 by M’Lady’s Records and must have got an NZ release earlier this year. One for all shoegaze freaks.

The Show: Loose booty

The Herb Whisperer played Elvis Costello‘s 1978 classic “Pump It Up” because allegedly it is sampled in the Beastie Boys’ album Paul’s Boutique, a bona fide treasure trove of samples.

It may explain why Sly & The Family Stone’s “Loose Booty” is now an earworm – it was sampled on the track “Shadrach”. Here’s a video of”Loose Booty” from 1975…

And let’s not forget Elvis Costello, from 1978…

If you want to listen to the Solid Steel Radio Show where DJ’s Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food deconstruct, reimagine and reassemble Paul’s Boutique (and in the process revealing to The Herb Whisperer the presence of Pump It Up on the original), here it is.
