The Show: I cannot understand how he sleeps at night

Open Mike Eagle is the linchpin holding today’s show together with two songs taken from his Comedy Central Show “The New Negroes”

The rest of the show is interspersed with musings on the past, present and future of social media. We recommend listening to the full TED talk given by Carole Cadwalladr.

The Show: Happy Christmas From The Stars

neteToday’s show contained snippets from a flexi-disc that was given away with a December 1982 edition of Smash Hits. The top pop stars of the day (plus The Piranhas‘ Boring Bob Grover) recorded special Christmas greetings for the readers. The idea was Neil Tennant’s, the news editor at the time.

To hear recollections from other writers and editors have a listen to The Word podcast “Remembering Smash Hits” taken from one of this year’s Word In Your Ear events. One anecdote involves heroin, Marilyn, Jimmy Saville, sea cadets, French restaurateurs and a stroppy teenager from Rochdale – all the elements you need for a true Christmas tale.
