The Show: The Joint with The Herb Whisperer presents Miss America featuring NPR vs Peter Robinson x Songs

A long, and possibly unnecessary, title for today’s show but it’s a title very much in keeping with how our top pop stars now like to bill themselves (and in the process ensure their share of any dollar bills generated via streaming).

Peter Robinson from Popjustice wrote about this practice in The Guardian and joined NPR for a special All Songs Considered podcast to explain in more detail.

Black Estate Sessions Volume 2

We’re taking a break this weekend which means no show on RDU today.

Just in case you were desperate for a hit of The Joint here’s a recording of the live set we played at Black Estate’sDumpling, Wine & Records” night last month.

The audio quality is a little scratchy in places. As the evening wore on the faders were pushed higher and the needle was bouncing in the red. You know how noisy and raucous these vineyard events can get, especially when you break out the Wham vinyl.

Black Estate Sessions Volume 1

black-estate-playlist-20150418The Joint likes to dream of DJ’ing with the greats at crucial moments in pop history. Larry Levan in 70’s NYC. Don Letts‘ punky reggae party at The Roxy. DJ Alfredo at Amnesia on Ibiza in the late eighties.

But at our age when we play out it’s not exactly 20,000 people mashed up in field. More like several dozen punters dining at a vineyard. Less “Sorted For E’s & Whizz“. More “Little Old Wine Drinker Me“. Which is exactly why we were invited to play records at the Black Estate Tasting Room & Eatery last Saturday afternoon.

Many thanks to all for making us feel very welcome and a special mention to Waipara DJ Sylvia for helping out. When we ran out of vinyl after 4 hours she filled in with her Lorde LP. Unfortunately we’d stopped recording the set at this point so it was very much a case of you had to be there. Which means in future years, just like with Levan, Letts and Alfredo, thousands will claim they were.

The Joint. Keeping it real(ly mellow).

The show: Saturday 2 October 2010 – “Post Dubstep” addendum

A Post About Post Dubstep

A Post About Post Dubstep

I now feel comfortable having used the term “Post Dubstep” on yesterday’s show, so I’m retracting the offer to give me a good kicking the next time you see me. The comfort comes from having Paul Morley uttering the same phrase in the introduction to his latest edition of Showing Off.

Within the many multi-media elements that make up this particular episode, which is dedicated to Dubstep, there is an extended interview with Joint favourite Jah Wobble where links are made between brie cheese and Miles Davis.
