The Show: Get Smartr

Now that the Stormzy – Wiley feud seems to have ground to a halt we offer you a review of all the sends (5 in total) in today’s mix. Head across to niche website Grime Beef for more details. We ran out of time to include the black midi and Afghan Dan additions to the canon.

The spoken word clips are from the Luminary podcast Smartr. First two episodes are free to download / stream but the remaining eight require a subscription. This makes things slightly awkward because Luminary is not available in New Zealand.

Closing track is the 15 minute “Word Wall 2”, featuring Elena Poulou and taken off the first vinyl release from Salford club The White Hotel. The club might not look promising from the outside but inside, well, just check out their gig guide for starters.

The Show: When Harri Met Steve

I remember hearing today’s opening song on the John Peel show back in 1980. Unfortunately I could never recall the name of the band (The Silver) or the name of the track (Do You Wanna Dance). What I thought I recalled was that the band were from Sweden (Finland actually), were very young and fell about in hysterics half way through the performance. Not even the most sophisticated 21st century search engines could provide a solution to a 40 year mystery with that scant information.

By sheer chance I came across a website that did provide the solution, buried deep in a post about ramshackle outsider art music. However the mystery continues because my browser history has been deleted and I can’t remember the website I have to thank.
