The Show: Fricking piranhas (without laser weapons)

Guns. Gyrocopters. G Plan armchair. Stroked white pussycat. Ninjas. Spaceships. Secret base in a volcano. And fricking piranhas WITHOUT laser weapons on their heads. Fricking. Piranhas. Only Roald Dahl could have written it. And only Sean Connery could have fronted it without laughing. Genius. Evil genius. That’s right – it’s You Only Live Twice

And if that’s got you interested in celluloid we’ll be seeing you at the New Zealand International Film Festival which starts this Thursday in Christchurch.

The show: Crazy diamonds

In lieu of having to write anything of substance, here are two lovely new videos to distract you from our writing impotence…

First up, the new Fistful of Gems‘ video “Diamond” by ex-Tiger Tones member Mark Wundercastle.

Second up, Flat Eric & William Fichtner play chess while promoting the new Mr Oizo free EP “Stade 3”.

The show: Huh?

Huh? That’s right. Spiritualized are back with their new album “Sweet Heart Sweet Light”. It’s like Jason Pierce disappears for years at a time but has an impeccable knack of always picking up where he left off. And he does good epics, like “Hey Jane”…

The show: Double Retro. We get sent a CD and, apparently, it’s from 1982. Or maybe Minneapolis.

Thank you Claps and Guilt Ridden Pop – no idea how you came across us but we’re glad you did and we hope you don’t mind our loosely calling you an updated Minimal Wave band.

Whilst we’re on the subject of Minimal Wave, still no news on when or if any material from our favourite band of that period, Lufthansa Terminal, will be released but lots of information on the record label itself over at Dangerous Minds.

And that’s not the only correspondence we got this week.

Adam Macaulay of the Brighton, England duo Curxes emailed us about the painstakingly hand-crafted video that Roberta Fidora made for their new single “Haunted Gold”. Love the stonking beat and belting vocals. Modern cabaret disco at its very best! See the video below…

Anthonie Tonnon of Tono and the Finance Company got in touch to tell us that they’ll be playing a free show at Dux Live Friday 4 May with T54, Miniatures and Brown.

Which reminds me, the new EP by Miniatures is amazing. Fuzzy shoegaze never sounded so good. Unbelievably, the EP is a free download on their Bandcamp page. Fill your boots, as they say.

The show: Shall we go a little retro?

If you need some fresh ideas and fresh music allow us to recommend freaky French label Circus Company. Free mixes and podcasts are available from their Soundcloud page or podcasts page. Fill your boots. Or iPod. Or harddrive. Or whatever.

The Mole (Circus Company Radio) mix from December 2011 is a real treat. Lots of old Motown soul and funk and a few surprises. Very classy. Got me digging out Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell records at home. And if you like those retro soul, funk, and electro sounds then you can’t go too wrong plundering Milk Crate Breaks.
