The Show: I won’t get on my knees. Don’t make me do that please…

While researching and putting together the show this week (which involves throwing darts at music maps and scouring Bandcamp for Christchurch and Brisbane music) I stumbled across Hatchie & The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart’s glorious cover of The Jesus & Mary Chain’s “Sometimes Always”.

Proof indeed that the Reid brothers have an uncanny knack for writing perfect pop songs lovingly drenched in honeyed guitar tones. Sadly the pink vinyl 7-inch single has sold out but you can still have a listen below.

I seem also to have stumbled into the trap of playing TV theme tunes, but sometimes you just have to scratch that itch.

And on with the show…

The Show: BNE

A recent flying visit to Brisbane by Fraserhead shaped the playlist today. A tight schedule meant he could not get to any gigs or record shopss but scouring Bandcamp later on for Brisbane’s alt, indie, left-field and electronically tinged offerings shed light on quite a vibrant music culture. Think of it as a musical travelogue rather than an exhaustive survey. Thank you also to Mel Echo of Melbourne’s Annual Leaf for recommendations and pointers too.

PS: The above image is a detail of “Borne On The Wind” (2013) by Brisbane born artist Anne Wallace from her Suburban Noir project. The major survey Anne Wallace: Strange ways at QUT Art Museum more than made up for missing out on gigs and record shops.

The Show: It all means the same, down the line

Winter hibernation doesn’t seem to have dented or affected musical productivity in Ōtautahi Christchurch. In these darkest and coldest of months the releases keep coming.

Looking forward to the new KOOL AID (the artists formerly known as Brian Tamaki and The Kool Aid Kids) Family Portrait EP. Lovely video too for ‘Family Portrait Revisited’, ironically a good summer day out in this Antipodean Gothic paradise.

And not forgetting these Christchurch cats, to name just a few who appear on the show today…

NECRUM SELECT

GETSET

CARAMEL SMOOTH HEAVEN & JESS ASPINWALL
