The Show: French nouns have genders. I do not.

revenge-of-the-she-punks.jpg

We’re currently working our way through Vivien Goldman’s book “Revenge Of The She-Punks – A Feminist Music History From Poly Styrene To Pussy Riot”. That might go some way to explaining the presence of Rosa Yemen, Bush Tetras and Bikini Kill on today’s show. Expect even more highlights in a couple of weeks time when we finally get to grips with Fea and Fertil Miseria.

And whilst we are on the subject of Poly Styrene, allow us to recommend the recent documentary about her life – “I Am A Cliché

The Show: And whatever happened to Bubba Sparxxx?

Kudos to Denzel Curry for rhyming Bubba Sparxxx with Rosa Parks in “Take_it_Back_v2”, one of our favourite couplets of the year so far.

“After dark the riot starts, way uglier than Bubba Sparxxx
Still tryin’ to raise the charts so I don’t have to push a shopping cart
You fell in love with Kali Ma, but now it’s time to take your heart
These niggas want to take it back like civil rights and Rosa Parks”

The Show: It seems nowadays cab rides are rather pricely…

On the show today, highlights include a sneaky threesome from the new ITALIANS DO IT BETTER compilation “After Dark 3”, new releases from Ōtautahi Christchurch denizens HORN, VIOLET FRENCH, T.G. SHAND, LOCAL FLORIST., ZANE 2000, DOUJIN DUKE, and WURLD SERIES.

Plus our favourite Brisbane beatsmith ANARCHOSOPHIST recently got in touch to remind us about a few of his new cuts. If you like woozy, lofi, soundtrack hip-hop and you like cats then you’re sure going to dig “The Cat King in the Year of the Plague”…

By the way, today’s show title originated with an earworm of the Bob James classic “Angela” lead to a YouTube treasure hunt starting with Bob James discussing being sampled by the hip-hop community:

And thus led to the (re)discovery of Souls of Mischief “Cab Fare”:

The Show: I can barely remember how it feels…

Almost the end of the year and out of the blue Joint favourite MICA LEVI sneakily drops her first ever solo album. For that reason there was a quick rejig of today’s playlist to start proceedings with possibly the shortest track we’ve played all year, but definitely the track with the longest name. See playlist details below.

And on with the show…

  • MICA LEVI – A plain clothed Jimi Hendrix drives me to Newcastle. For some reason the trip will take 3 days and he is going to do it for £150. He drives really smoothly and only listens to one album which is by someone with Joy in their name. Joy’s music is covers of classic rock songs but with all the edge smoothed off. We arrive in Brazil and I impress someone because I say obrigado. The same person asks me to find them an intern. I don’t think I can but I try. I am nervous in the girls changing room and play trap songs loud off my phone.
  • CARAMEL SMOOTH HEAVEN & JESS ASPINWALL – Cant I? (feat. luis)
  • FRENCH CONCESSION – Peak
  • JUNO IS – It’s No Groover

The Show: Every time we meet we play hide and seek

It’s taken a little over 11 months but The Herb Whisperer has finally managed to watch his first complete film of 2020 – Steve McQueen’s “Lovers Rock”. Admittedly, it’s only 70 minutes long so it wasn’t much of a stretch.  Plus 10 of those 70 minutes were comprised of just one song, the extended (then a cappella) version of Janet Kay’s “Silly Games” that closes today’s show
