Starting off the show today with the brand new, soothing and atmospheric release from Yuna Lesca (ex CHC now based in London).
And thanks to The Bad Professor who struck gold and put us on to Lonnie Holley‘s “Six Space Shuttles and 144,000 Elephants”. Definitely song title of the day.
As The Joint reluctantly adapts to middle-aged life it’s heartening to see two 70ish year old brothers making angry, vibrant, catchy pop music. We reckon these might possibly be some of the best tunes of the Maels’ 50 year career.
And in this week’s edition of Lyrics Bingo match the following couplets to their respective songs:
“Ain’t left the city in months,
I guess Westfield knows what I want”
“I’m a janitor,
Oh my genitals”
“You’re a feminist until I won’t fuck you,
You’re a feminist until I talk to other guys”
Lady Leshurr – Where Are You Now? (Featuring Wiley)
Skepta – Man
808 State – In Yer Face (Bicep Remix)
The second part is inspired by holiday reading material – Good Night & Good Riddance by David Cavanagh. All the following tunes are mentioned in the book and previously unknown to us.
Good Night & Good Riddance
1969 Andy Capp – Pop A Top
1973 Funkadelic – If You Don’t Like The Effects, Don’t Produce The Cause
1979 Honey Bane – Girl On The Run
1985 Dignitary Stylish – Pon De Attack
1988 Big Lady K – Don’t Get Me Started (Stuff & Thangs Version)
1988 R+R – Acid Off A Way
1994 Sonic Subjunkies – Central Industrial
1997 Piano Magic – Angel Pie / Magic Tree
2000 Hefner – Don’t Give Up On Us Baby
The third part is our usual fare with one eye on new releases in 2017. At The Drive-In. Cate Le Bon. The XX. British Sea Power.
The NWA movie “Straight Outta Compton” hits the big screen in the next week but if you don’t have $17 to spare for a movie ticket or are too busy to spend 147 minutes sitting in a cinema get the gist with the EXPLICIT CONTENT ONLY version of the classic album. One for the whole family to sing along to. Is “nuts” really a swear word though?!?!?!?!?
Before people queued up for Apple products they queued up for Microsoft software. Not a bad earner for the Rolling Stones. Strange days from 1995…
