The show: Averted Vision redux

https://soundcloud.com/resetnz/post-mortem

Last night we met with The Joint advisory board. It was an informal and relaxed meeting where we discussed the future of the show. In a bid to increase listener pleasure 37% per annum our board suggested that we follow the lead of the Government and the Christchurch City Council by conducting partial asset sales. This will take the form of us handing over part of the show (a maximum of 49%) to guest hosts, or investors if you will.

For that reason local duo Reach and Offset aka Reset, who also happen to be the proprietors of the Averted Vision record label, are back today for a guest mix.

The Show: There’s no school like the old school and Dizzee & Wiley are the fucking Headmasters

Apologies. We had an uninformed dig at Sasha Frere-Jones‘ Destiny Child’s “Bug-A-B00” remix saying that he was over 10 years late to the whole early 2000s bootleg craze. Upon closer inspection (eg reading the fineprint on his Soundcloud) his remix was done back in 2003.

Double apologies. No decent recording of yesterday’s show, so no podcast.

The Show: Oddball UK Hip Hop

Strange U has a new EP out on Eglo Records consisting of weird, murky, grainy hip hop.

How weird? Well the record label describes it as “rap music never sounding so orthopaedic” and that Strange U are ” invoking the spirts of Oshun, Vishnu, Apollo, Sobek and Jim Henson” in order to “crush Duran Duran rapper with a Dr Claw beer mit”.

For some reason this all makes us hark back to the Infinite Livez’ “Bush Meat”  album from 2004. So to enable you to compare and contrast here are Strange U’s “Klaatu Barada Nikto” and Infinite Livez’ “The Adventures Of The Lactating Man”

(actually it is mainly contrast)

The Show: Blobs of red jelly

Thank you long time listener Michael Mickelbart for bringing to our attention the brand new Isolée single “Allowance”. It’s lovely minimal house that reminds us of the early days of The Joint. You can watch the video for “Allowance” below. Be warned – it features ghosts and blobs of red jelly. Nice to have you tuned in from the USA, Michael!

Allow us to also recommend the Delusions of Grandeur podcast hosted by Norm de Plume. Always a fantastic selection from a classy record label. Put us on to the fantastic disco sounds of Drop Out Orchestra and the new “Pathfinder” EP by Toby Tobias. Hear more goodness over at DoG’s Soundcloud page.
