The Show: I can barely remember how it feels…

Almost the end of the year and out of the blue Joint favourite MICA LEVI sneakily drops her first ever solo album. For that reason there was a quick rejig of today’s playlist to start proceedings with possibly the shortest track we’ve played all year, but definitely the track with the longest name. See playlist details below.

  • MICA LEVI – A plain clothed Jimi Hendrix drives me to Newcastle. For some reason the trip will take 3 days and he is going to do it for £150. He drives really smoothly and only listens to one album which is by someone with Joy in their name. Joy’s music is covers of classic rock songs but with all the edge smoothed off. We arrive in Brazil and I impress someone because I say obrigado. The same person asks me to find them an intern. I don’t think I can but I try. I am nervous in the girls changing room and play trap songs loud off my phone.

The Show: Ding dong

R.I.P. Florian Schneider (1947-2020) a founding member of Kraftwerk. The breakthrough was perhaps their fourth album “Autobahn” released in 1974 but a bit of delving reacquainted us with their first two albums (efficiently titled “Kraftwerk 1” and “Kraftwerk 2”) and a reminder of the gentle beauty that is the epic Klingklang. A nice way to start a contemplative show.

And later… down the YouTube rabbit hole we went discovering live footage from 1970 of Kraftwerk at Rockpalast. We thought we were big deal going to house discos and raves in 1989 and had no idea how far ahead of us those crazy German kids were. Keytars, synths, multimedia, a motorik beat we can bug out to, and a stylish crowd. Minds blown…

And those interludes today? That was Phoebe Waller-Bridge recounting to Deborah Frances-White in episode 199 of The Guilty Feminist her Covid-19 lockdown experiences with the three neighbourhood cats: Good Cat, Bad Cat and Mystery Cat.

The Show: Bar-b-que courtesy J.R.R. Tolkien Jr, George R.R. Martin

Catching up on 2019. Jeremy Deller‘s ‘Everybody in the Place, An Incomplete History of Britain 1984-1992’ somehow intertwining miners’ strikes, civil disobedience, and warehouse raves. Mind blown.

Also glad to see the return of Rory Ferreira aka R.A.P. Ferreira aka Milo aka Scallops Hotel. We thought he had quit the business but in reviewing 2019 discovered his newish R.A.P. Ferreira persona. Who else could rap about J.R.R. Tolkein and George R.R. Martin running a barbecue??? No one. But that was possibly a rhetorical question.

The Show: It all means the same, down the line

Winter hibernation doesn’t seem to have dented or affected musical productivity in Ōtautahi Christchurch. In these darkest and coldest of months the releases keep coming.

Looking forward to the new KOOL AID (the artists formerly known as Brian Tamaki and The Kool Aid Kids) Family Portrait EP. Lovely video too for ‘Family Portrait Revisited’, ironically a good summer day out in this Antipodean Gothic paradise.

And not forgetting these Christchurch cats, to name just a few who appear on the show today…
