The Show: Electric black shadow runs ‘cross the sun…

New release from THE BIG FRESH COLLECTIVE out right now. JET SET GHETTO TECH sees Liam K. Swiggs and DJ Simon Dallow pay tribute to the video game soundtracks of Hideki Naganuma.

And how the heck did Captain Beefheart make it into the show today? I’ve always been a bit scared of his reputation but at a recent talk at the Christchurch Art Gallery legendary photographer Laurence Aberhart mentioned that painter Bill Hammond may have had his wheels spun by Captain Beefheart’s “Run Paint Run Run” which could possibly explain Bill Hammond’s predilection for paint running. And after summoning the courage to listen to said catchy ditty I was hooked.

Here endeth today’s fine art lesson.

The Show: It all means the same, down the line

Winter hibernation doesn’t seem to have dented or affected musical productivity in Ōtautahi Christchurch. In these darkest and coldest of months the releases keep coming.

Looking forward to the new KOOL AID (the artists formerly known as Brian Tamaki and The Kool Aid Kids) Family Portrait EP. Lovely video too for ‘Family Portrait Revisited’, ironically a good summer day out in this Antipodean Gothic paradise.

And not forgetting these Christchurch cats, to name just a few who appear on the show today…

NECRUM SELECT

The Show: Sit down politely, do it like Nike…

Good friend of The Joint Blair Parkes has been busy as ever in his shed studio down in New Brighton and he’s got a new album ‘liveable city’ out now on Bandcamp. Dreamy, fuzzy, trippy and hazy. Just how we like our pop. Video above for the single ‘habit to break’.

A track from Motorbass kicks off the show today in memory of French producer extraordinaire Philippe “Zdar” Cerboneschi (Motorbass, La Funk Mob, and Cassius). And then we delve into a werewolf exploitation horror movie soundtrack from 1971 before weaving our way through our usual left-field and eclectic selections of pop, noise, beats and off-kilter techno.

The Show: I got some things I cannot add up in my mind…

If the show today was a degustation menu it would go a little something like this… baroque pop, power pop, gentle pop, a musical sorbet, a noodle without, distressed beats, 80s synth house, and a final refreshing sorbet.

And Fraserhead is still addicted to the twangy-jaunty-indie-country-power-pop of the new SCHOFIELD SPIRES album belafonte. Thank you Blair Parkes for the tip off.

“math teacher” is a favourite. Can’t believe they didn’t win RDU’s RoundUp on the strength of this number alone! Scandal!!!
