RIP Robbie Shakespeare…

Not sure if “Boops (Here To Go)” is the song he’d most want to be remembered for but it’s in today’s playlist because it’s an 80’s cut-n-paste classic here at The Joint HQ.

We managed to sneak in part of the 12″ version of “Smalltown Boy” to pay our respects. To fully appreciate the continuing relevance of that song we recommend this recent BBC Soul Music podcast.

… and RIP Mike Nesmith

This news came in too late for us to celebrate his life on the show but he was our favourite Monkee, wrote one of our all time favourite tunes * and we happen to be part way through his autobiography.

The Show: Mixed Herbs.

Two cover versions on todays show.

The Ridiculous Trio drag The Stooges’ “No Fun” back through time and plant it firmly in the middle of a 1950’s U.S. strip club. Maybe that’s the life it was always meant to have, the opening track on a Las Vegas grind CD.

The second cover poses a philosophical question. Can a person be said to be covering a song when that same person both co-wrote and performed on the original? Answers to Jah Wobble, who has reworked the 1978 single “Public Image”. More of his PIL makeovers are available on Bandcamp.

Speaking of revisiting the past, today’s playlist also contains The Umbrellas with a song that could easily have seen them headlining Indie Club back in 1997, even though the tune itself was released in August of this year.
