The Joint (Slight Return)

The Joint (Slight Return)

The RDU studio, along with many other buildings in Christchurch, is still out of bounds following the earthquake on the 22nd February.

In the meantime the hosts of your favourite shows are dialling it in (if you’ll pardon the expression). By that we mean people are putting together mixes at home and supplying them to the station to be scheduled to play in their usual timeslots.

Via some magic we don’t pretend to understand – allegedly it involves a laptop, a transmitter and, quite possibly, tin cans and string – RDU therefore continues to broadcast.

So, in that same spirit we present what we’re calling the Hostless ADHD Mix. Think of it as pure, concentrated Joint – more songs in 60 minutes than we normally fit into a three hour show. Download it below or listen to it live on RDU 98.5FM on Saturday 26th March at midday (New Zealand Time).

On Tuesday 21 February 2011 at 12.51pm a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch and Lyttelton.

Many lives have been lost (147 at last count), the damage is widespread, and many people still have no power and water.

This is much, much worse than the 4 September 2010 earthquake.

Our thoughts go out to those who have lost loved ones, family, friends and colleagues. We can’t imagine what you must be going through.

I’m not sure when we’ll be back on air. RDU 98.5FM is out of action but music doesn’t feel that important right now. Keep up to date with RDU happenings at www.facebook.com/RDU985FM.

To all those affected by the earthquake – kia kaha. We will get through this. But it’s going to be hard and it’s going to take a long time.

The show: Slo-mo disco rules the day

At the risk of becoming a Hipster Runoff meme… Ain’t nothing like doing a show when my Macbook keeps playing the dreaded spinning beach ball of death – I  suppose it’s like having a built in cosmic disco effects unit, just less predictable. A good reminder that live radio is great fun.

In today’s WTF?!?!? segment – remember this lovely number from 1986? Doesn’t it bring back memories of shitty school discos or shitty redneck nightclubs? Gotta love the one hit wonders. Boy’s Don’t Cry possibly hit the big time because of the major labels being investigated for payola back in the 1980s. Have a read of Fredric Dannen’s “Hit Men: Powerbrokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business” for details.

Here’s a bonus 45 minutes of silver age electro from Intergalactic Gary that we can’t fit into our 2 hour slimline version of the show. Thanks to BoomBangBlam for tipping us off.

The show: Old acquaintances and new friends

As promised, today we played tracks from some old acquaintances such as …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (didn’t realise they’d been around since 1993! but they were one of the first bands we played on The Joint when we started the show way back in 2001), Fujiya & Miyagi, and Destroyer. But even I wasn’t expecting The Herb Whisperer to play Wang Chung / Huang Chung!!!

We weren’t kidding about Rastamouse either.
