Uneasy listening

You are listening to
WARNING: You are listening to is quite addictive.

Due to work commitments (The Herb Whisperer) and general faineancy (Fraserhead) there was no action packed instalment of The Joint on RDU yesterday.

If you need some way of filling this void in your life please allow us to recommend some uneasy listening to get you through today, Christmas, and the New Year.

You are listening to combines real time police and emergency services scanner audio from various US cities with ambient and drone tracks from Soundcloud. More comforting and soothing than voyeuristic it’s the brainchild of Eric Eberhardt (read the IndieShuffle interview here). For me it’s the aural equivalent of a movie scene showing the city at night from a helicopter. Very nice to fall asleep to, whether in a sunny backyard or late at night in bed.

And if that’s right up your alley my workmate Tim recommends the following SomaFM channels:

  • SF 10-33 – Ambient music mixed with the sounds of San Francisco public safety radio traffic.
  • Mission Control – Celebrating NASA and space explorers everywhere. A mix of ambient and experimental music mixed with the historical sounds of the space program.

The Show: Italians know their Panini

Italian glam rock revivalists Giuda and their 70’s Panini football sticker references feature on the show today.

A music video set in a decrepit sport ground puts us in mind of The Fall with their promo for “Kicker Conspiracy”, filmed at Burnley’s ground, Turf Moor, in the early 80’s.

And as mentioned at the end of the show, you should never forget about Dre because apparently Dr Dre is 2012′s highest paid musician.

The show: Remembrance of things past

Seems we’re playing some real throwbacks today. And bands that want to sound like throwbacks (looking at you Giuda and Eternal Tapestry). Which is a good thing if it means that sifty psychedelia and Krautrock is making a welcome resurgence (not that it’s ever really gone away).

If you want a really good sifty psychedelic time then be sure to have a peep below at Shacklock Meth Party‘s dirty video for “This Is My Shit, Gwen”.

The Show: Wundercastle!

Being suckers for good pop tunes last week we played you four tracks from Crystal Magic Records, the Sydney based record label run by Fraser Austin (of Christchurch perfect synth-pop duo Frase + Bri fame). One of the tracks played was a new one from Wundercastle (aka Mark Holland of Tiger Tones!) brilliantly channelling and reinventing early 90s rave.

We’re pleased to announce that Wundercastle’s new album Straight Up Leisure Time is now available online at crystalmagic.bandcamp.com and is giving us fantastic 808 State and Altern-8 flashbacks. Loving the track “HI-NRG” with the cute little Royksopp keys. We’ll play a selection of tracks on the show today. Otherwise, have a good listen below.
