The Story Of Common People

We’re not usually that fussed when a band reforms, particularly any band whose heyday coincided with the height(?) of the 90’s Brit Pop era, but the news that Pulp were set for a series of comeback concerts did send a shiver of nostalgia down the collective spine of the extended Joint family.

So, in the week that Jarvis re-appeared on the cover of NME, we came across a series of YouTube videos from 2008 that form a one hour BBC 3 documentary entirely devoted to the song “Common People”.

The first of the six clips is posted below and you can find the rest of them here.

Everything’s Amazing & Nobody’s Happy – Louis C K ( @louisck ) Nails It

“How quickly the world owes him something he knew existed only 10 seconds ago”

Personally, I find myself torn between between empathy for the rant and an affinity with the impatience with technology. So does that make me some kind of unholy cross between Generation X and Generation Y and Generation Z? We could call it Generation XOYO.

If I Were An Animal – the Christchurch online music show

In case you missed it first time round be sure to have a peek at If I Were An Animal – the Christchurch online music show.

The show is produced by three New Zealand Broadcasting students (Libby Dallison, Karl Stanley, and Phillip Gow) for their major project. Because it’s a project the show consists of only has four episodes but it’s quite impressive. Let’s hope they can find the time and energy to make more.

Bands and events featured include: Flip Grater, The Datsuns, the CHARTdisc 4 release party, Cairo Knife Fight, The Eastern, Kids of 88, Sleepy Age, The Unfaithful Ways, Rare Shot Blue, The Dukes, Green Like Go, and Skudderhill.

I guess what spins my wheels is that while I have seen some of these artists live, listened to them on the radio, and read about them in various music publications seeing moving pictures of the artists adds yet another dimension.

Here’s the four episodes…

Benga “Baltimore Clap”

Damn. Can’t believe I missed this first time round.

I gave the Benga album “Phaze One” a thrashing for a few weeks when it got released (June?) then clean forgot about it.

Didn’t realise there was a freaky video for “Baltimore Clap”. Exhilarating, captivating and depressing all at the same time!

Gold – always believe in your soul…

After feeling sleep deprived from all the earthquake aftershocks, and at a loose end from not being able to do the show, this one put me back in a good mood. Let’s hope that this cunt goes on to do cover versions of Phil Collins, Paul Young, and Billy Joel.

I do believe that Spandau Ballet’s “Gold” is The Herb Whisperer’s karaoke/SingStar song of choice. However, none of us will ever be able to sing it again without gratuitously swearing throughout it.

THX ALISON !!!

By the way, here’s the original – just as dodgy. But a belter of a song!
