The Show: It was 30 years ago today, Donna Summer taught the Mancs to play

Apologies for the woozy and disorientating sound levels / effects at the start and end of today’s podcast – we were best by a myriad of technical issues. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. Ou quelque chose.

The first part of the show was a tribute to the 30th anniversary of the release of New Order’s top party anthem and conga line favourite “Blue Monday“.

By the band’s own admission the song contained elements of  Klein & MBO’s “Dirty Talk” and a drum pattern lifted from a Donna Summer b-side. We didn’t get time to showcase the rest of the building blocks – the bassline from Sylvester’s “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” and a Kraftwerk sample or two.

However it does give us a chance to post this video again, the best of all the “Blue Monday” cover versions by the Brythoniaid Male Voice Choir.

The Show: Making the cut

A lot of stuff didn’t. Not for quality control reasons mind. Too much music and not enough time.

Have a look at the excess we had over on The Ones That Got Away Spotify playlist. (Un)fortunately those reworkings of Roxy Music in a 20’s jazz style aren’t available in NZ and that truly bizarre Estonian Eurovision contender is YouTube only…

This is a heavily edited show – we had to cut out chunks of audio because of a dodgy microphone and, more impressively, interference caused by the transmitter overheating in the blazing Canterbury sun. Global warming my arse.

…and onto our shoulder.

Apologies for the variable sound quality of today’s show. And by that we’re not just referring to the off-mic coughing fits, which we did attempt to suppress with Monkey Shoulder Whisky.

The Show: Taking The Mix

Quite a few tracks on today’s show have been extracted from various mixtapes that have been taking our fancy lately, including the Kwesachu set over at The Quietus, Electric Youth’s contribution to the White Light series and The Roots Of South Africa Punk soundtrack courtesy of Exile On Moan Street.
