The show: Using music to predict the result for the European Cup final.

Chateau Marmont
Chateau Marmont work hard on predicting the result of the Champions League final.

Indulge us. Please. For a minute. Punchline (sort of) coming…

This Wednesday night/Thursday morning (depending where you are in the world) sees the 2009 European Cup Final (annoyingly called the Champions League for the last 17 years) between FC Barcelona and Manchester United, arguably the two best football teams currently on the planet, and each boasting potential world players of the year.

The Herb Whisperer swears that this is the most excited he has been about a football match in years.

It’s a difficult match to predict. Will it be a goalless affair or a feast of goals? More importantly, how are we going to bet on this match and try to make up for the debacles of our poor betting records for the last few World Cups and European Championships?

Inspiration came in the form of playing Barcelona producer John Talabot‘s “Naomi” back to back with Manchester outfit Delphic‘s “Counterpoint”.

Because the former is 7 something minutes long and the latter is 6 something minutes long we have decided to put our life savings on Barcelona winning 7-6. In extra time.

With those sorts of winnings we’ll be able to throw a big party for all of you at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles sometime soon. The invitations will be mailed out next Friday. Looking forward to seeing you there.

If we lose the bet, it’s our equivalent of burning a million quid, just like what The K Foundation did in 1994

The show: Jet Jaguar drops in

Jet Jaguar
Jet Jaguar models a bright orange hoodie from the Tommy Hilfiger “Guantanamo Bay” collection.

We didn’t scare him off. Jet Jaguar, as promised, did drop into the show for an hour* to play some brand new tunes, chat about Malty Media (his collaborative radio show with Aquaboogie), and subtly plug the hell out of the latest compilation he appears on Apropos of Nothing.

Off air it was more like a Gitmo interrogation session – ironic really because Mr Jaguar was wearing a bright orange hoodie from the Tommy Hilfiger “Guantanamo Bay” collection.

At least we got to the bottom of the mystery regarding his website’s odd domain name www.nonwrestler.com. Turns out that way back in the day when Mr Jaguar was trying to register the Jet Jaguar domain name he discovered that a Mexican wrestler already owned it. Henceforth he decided that instead of trying to come up with a new moniker it would just be easier to use the term “non wrestler”. Now, that’s genius.

And a bonus for you music geeks – Jet Jaguar recommends AudioMulch.

* It’s possible that Mr Jaguar stuck around for an hour because we hid his wallet (so he couldn’t catch a bus or taxi) and cellphone (so he couldn’t call for help).

The show: Going blind from the heat, in the middle of a sunlit street

The Show: “Gorgeous” George Galloway vs Bill “No Spin Zone” O’Reilly. And the return of The Nicol Brothers.

Tunisian / Palestinian combo Checkpoint 303 have a brand new track out, “Needle Stuck On Lebanon“, which makes good use of news broadcast samples from around the world.

Not only should we thank them for letting us know the song is available as a free download from their website, we are also eternally grateful that they sent us this link to a George Galloway interview that appeared on Sky News UK recently. It’s not a spectacle for the fainthearted, as the Respect MP tears strips off the hapless journalist to the point where he comes across as a misogynistic bully.

We can’t imagine Rupert Murdoch was amused and it certainly wouldn’t have gone to air on Rupert’s other news channel, Fox. Unless George went up against Bill O’Reilly. That really would be a heavyweight challenge. So much so that it could be made the equivalent of a pay-per-view prizefight. We’re willing to cough up a few bucks to watch so let’s start lobbying for it now.

And thank you to The Nicol Brothers aka Offset and Hank for dropping in today to lay down a few drum’n’bass sets. Cheers fellas.

The Show: Drum ‘n’ bass madness

True drum and bass overload on The Joint today! It seemed to generate a lot of text messages and phone calls. We’ll have to do it more often since we’ve been awfully slack on the d’n’b front.

Double big thanks to Offset and Hank (aka The Nicol Brothers) for popping in to play a few sets of their favourite d’n’b cuts. Check the playlist below to see the ground they covered – Offset going for the crunchier numbers and Hank going for the mellower melodic tunes. Hearing Hank cut Headspace‘s “Fly Away” in and out of High Contrast’s “Racing Green” was priceless. What’s scary is that Hank is only 14 and would give a lot of DJs a run for their money. We’re a lot, lot older than 14 and can’t even mix one record.

And speaking of Headspace his alter ego Andre Hemer has an exhibition of his paintings on at 64zero3 gallery in Christchurch.
