The Show: The return of hip house, but did it ever really go away?

RIP Lewis Collins (1946-2013). Star of bodice rippers (quite literally in the grenade rescue scene below from The Professionals) and other fine action TV shows and films.

The Show: 2 oz Pop, 1 oz Hip Hop, 1 splash freshly squeezed Jungle & 3-4 oz Flying Sorcerers

Today is the 50th anniversary of John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s innovative invention of conspiracy theories.

Don’t forget to pour yourself a large Panther Piss cocktail in tribute to the disco magnificence of the brand new Shit And Shine EP.

Ingredients

2 oz white rum
1 oz triple sec
1 splash freshly squeezed lime juice
3 – 4 oz lemonade

Directions

Stir the rum, triple sec and lime juice together in an old-fashioned glass 3/4 filled with ice cubes. Fill with lemonade, and serve.

Inspired by that same song we’ll now continue to work on our #BigCatSounds playlist, adding both Janet Jackson’s Black Cat and Ratatat’s Wildcats as tunes that make full and excellent use of large feline growls, screams and cries.

The Show: ’79 Fever

Today’s opening (and truly mind boggling) song came courtesy of the Industrial Musicals website.

As well as an online archive, with audio snippets from a variety of these musicals from the 50’s to the 80’s, there’s also a book “Everything’s Coming Up Profits” which is making a strong early bid to be The Joint’s Christmas stocking filler.

For more information have a listen to an interview the authors gave to NPR, complete with recollections from a veteran of many of these productions, and have a look below at a brief appearance one of them made on the David Letterman Show.

The Show: Public Service Broadcasting’s Eleven Cities Tour

Elfstedentocht. Eleven Cities Tour.

It’s the world’s biggest ice skating race, taking in the Dutch cities of Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker and Dokkum, but it only happens when all the waterways connecting the cities are frozen to a depth of at least 15cm and the last time that happened was 1997.

That 16 year gap didn’t stop the Explore The North Festival commissioning Joint favourites Public Service Broadcasting to write two brand new songs to accompany archival footage of the event. The results were released on line this week and Elfstedentocht Part One made it onto today’s playlist.

The Show: There’s no school like the old school and Dizzee & Wiley are the fucking Headmasters

Apologies. We had an uninformed dig at Sasha Frere-Jones‘ Destiny Child’s “Bug-A-B00” remix saying that he was over 10 years late to the whole early 2000s bootleg craze. Upon closer inspection (eg reading the fineprint on his Soundcloud) his remix was done back in 2003.

Double apologies. No decent recording of yesterday’s show, so no podcast.
