The show: Return of The Herb Whisperer

DJ Foundation - Paradise

Clutching a sackful of Soul Jazz CD’s and Rough Trade vinyl, The Herb Whisperer has finally returned from the UK. The pick of his purchases is the new DJ Foundation LP “Paradise” and today we played side one in it’s entirety.

For some reason we still have difficulty believing DJ Foundation lives in Mosul, but not as much difficulty as the man himself has living there. Listen to this SBS interview with Metal Postcard’s Sean Hocking to find out more.

The show: Kept on the straight and narrow by Ladyfolk™ guest stars Kebabette and Lady Tulip

Thanks to Kebabette and Lady Tulip for dropping in for a Ladyfolk™ session. No – Ladyfolk™ is not the new Alt-Folk™ nor Feminine-AnCo™ – it just means glamorous tunes, ballsy rock, and no dubstep (because, apparently, ladies don’t like dubstep).

Far too many highlights from their she-lection to mention but Janelle Monae “Sincerely Jane”, Delorean “Big dipper” and Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head “Beard lust” really stood out.

More importantly, I am led to believe that some ladyfolk will be interested in Kebabette and Lady Tulip’s footwear for the show. So without further ado, here’s proof of what they wore…

Apologies: For those listening to the show or podcast, I apologise for the low voice sound levels. I had the mic a bit quiet and forgot to fade down the tracks in all the excitement of playing host to two guests with a fine music selection.

The show: Getting funky and retro

Gah! And that was a real self-loathing Stewie Griffin style “gah”. I can’t believe that I just used the term “funky”. Makes me sound like a  middle-aged middle-manager at a shitty office party that no one wanted to attend. The Herb Whisperer would have kicked my arse if he had been here. So let’s just pretend that I used the term “the funk” instead, okay?

So why the funk and retro? Well, there wasn’t a huge amount of it to be honest but during times of recession and long winters it’s good to dig through the record collection for a bit of inspiration hence the stone cold classics from Funky Four Plus One‘s (the epic “That’s The Joint” (the which inspired the name of this show) and The JBs (for a high speed funk workout).

But the point I’m getting to is that if you’re feeling a bit down and don’t mind falling into the fatal trap of shopping to make yourself feel better then you can’t go wrong by buying cheap second hand records. Especially from places like Galaxy Records where I scored mint copies of Blondie‘s “Autoamerican” (1980), Malcolm McLaren‘s “Duck Rock” (1983), and Stu and The Lads “Nice One Stu” (1976). Cheers Dave !!!
