The Show: Return of The Butcher

That’s right. Count Deano von Lounge is back from Osaka, Japan for a quick break. And he’s got lots of classic vinyl numbers to play you. He prefers the name DJ Butcher because he butchers the mix. Doesn’t worry us. That just means more music to listen to.

A message from Count Deano von Lounge himself:

If you think vinyl is dead go home and die : )

Twin Shadow “Five Seconds”

One of my favourite moments at the 2012 Laneway Festival in Auckland was seeing Twin Shadow on stage. I’m not usually starstruck but I was captivated by the charismatic George Lewis Jr. The whole band was tight but Mr Lewis was positively dreamy, a modern crooner who seemed to slow down time. My bromance moment I guess.

The new Twin Shadow album “Confess” is out early July on 4AD and sounds like, if the new single “Five Seconds” is anything to go by, a moody affair.

Here’s the video for “Five Seconds” – quite hypnotic and one that looks like it could have been directed by David Lynch. And because “Five Seconds” was a real earworm and reminded me of some guilty pleasures from the 1980s I’ve included those videos below too…

Dankeschön, Silke Hartung

A belated thank you to Silke Hartung (BFM’s Freak The Sheep host) for dropping into the show last Saturday and playing us some fresh ukelele.

Silke is a crazy lady.

Instead of going to Rarotonga for a beach holiday she decided to spend some time, and her birthday, in cold, pre-winter post-earthquake Christchurch. It might have something to do with her liking NZ music and wanting to see how the local scene was faring.

Despite me trying to distract her with questions about her hometown team FC Köln being relegated and selling Lukas Podolski to Arsenal, what tips she had for the Champions League final, and why she preferred Puma to Adidas she still managed to play an original tune for us. That’s class.

RIP Donna Summer (1948 – 2012)

No one did sultry like Donna Summer did. And teaming up with Giorgio Moroder was a stroke of genius. A real musical match made in heaven. “I Feel Love” is one of the all time classics.

If you ever wondered what we do when the microphones are switched off and the music is playing, this video for “Love To Love You Baby” from 1975 will give you an idea of our super smooth moves.

The show: RIP MCA (1964 – 2012)

Rest in peace Adam Yauch, you crazy motherflipper.

Your voice had more gravel than a quarry, I’m sure your tongue must have been made of sandpaper, you made some crazy albums, and not forgetting that you, Mike D and Adrock gave our show its name. So thank you for the good times…
