The Show: Oddball UK Hip Hop

Strange U has a new EP out on Eglo Records consisting of weird, murky, grainy hip hop.

How weird? Well the record label describes it as “rap music never sounding so orthopaedic” and that Strange U are “ invoking the spirts of Oshun, Vishnu, Apollo, Sobek and Jim Henson” in order to “crush Duran Duran rapper with a Dr Claw beer mit”.

For some reason this all makes us hark back to the Infinite Livez’ “Bush Meat”  album from 2004. So to enable you to compare and contrast here are Strange U’s “Klaatu Barada Nikto” and Infinite Livez’ “The Adventures Of The Lactating Man”

(actually it is mainly contrast)

The show: Shall we go a little retro?

If you need some fresh ideas and fresh music allow us to recommend freaky French label Circus Company. Free mixes and podcasts are available from their Soundcloud page or podcasts page. Fill your boots. Or iPod. Or harddrive. Or whatever.

The Mole (Circus Company Radio) mix from December 2011 is a real treat. Lots of old Motown soul and funk and a few surprises. Very classy. Got me digging out Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell records at home. And if you like those retro soul, funk, and electro sounds then you can’t go too wrong plundering Milk Crate Breaks.

Roots Manuva at The Bedford, Moorhouse Avenue, last night.

Pssst… The Herb Whisperer recommends buying the February 2012 issue of Mojo. The covermount CD is New Order’s 1983 masterpiece “Power, Corruption & Lies” covered, Blue Monday revisited, and  bonus tracks. Could have been a recipe for a disaster but you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Have a sneak preview of the tracks here.

The show: What peeps said we should have played last year

Today’s show 70′s rock, 80′s soundtracks, 90′s jungle & songs people tell us we should’ve played last year instead of the songs we did play.

Speaking of the 1980s, couldn’t resist sorry. Got reminded of the original last night and then this morning Woody aka Mudd of Sound Check reminded me of this lovely version of “I can’t go for that” as performed on Daryl Hall’s web TV show Live from Daryl’s House
