Orange Juice - Coals To Newcastle

The NME reported yesterday that Domino Recordings are set to release an Orange Juice 7 disc boxset on the 8th of November, possibly due to overwhelming public demand after The Joint played the title track of Edwyn Collins’ new CD “Losing Sleep” last Saturday. Possibly.

Entitled “Coals To Newcastle”, the release will comprise their entire discography plus video footage.

I’m particularly looking forward to the latter because it will include the official promo for “What Presence?!” – which I reckon to be the best Orange Juice single and a piece of video I’ve never seen. Derek Jarman directed to boot.

Sure, you can stream it online at Muzu.tv or vh1la.com or some other off -the-beaten-track video site but NOT if you live in New Zealand. We have to put up with some dodgy VHS footage of an Old Grey Whistle Test appearance or one of those motionless YouTube tributes…

It’s been an interesting World Cup. My wish at the start of the tournament was for a Spain versus Netherlands final with Spain edging it. That way, either the best team in the world is rewarded for several years of brilliant football OR the Dutch finally complete what they could not finish in 1974 and 1978. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would happen! Roll on Monday morning.

But my abiding memory of the World Cup 2010 (apart from France, England, and Italy all hilariously choking) is of Paul the Octopus who has been successfully predicting the Germany results – including the semi-final loss to Spain.

Paul the Octopus has now been immortalised in a classic “Downfall” remix. Funny – I thought that YouTube had squashed all the Downfall videos.

As mentioned on the show on Saturday, when I played “Havanna Sex Dwarf” – a track from the new Booka Shade album “More” – the first thing that popped into my mind like some weird flashback was Flat Eric – the crazy head nodding puppet from the Mr Oizo video for “Flat Beat”. Who knew that a puppet could have so much funk going on?

The Herb Whisperer also reminded me that Flat Eric was the star of Levi’s StaPrest commercials in 1999. Forgot about that.

Classic video from 2004. Who would have thought a driving test in LA featuring a classic Volvo 244 would work so well with French disco? The reversing near miss at 2’28″ is pure genius.

I’m currently driving a Volve 244 GLE (1980 vintage) as a loan car (thx Timo @ Fixations). It has a tape deck and only 1980s music will work in it (Enya sounds better than Lionel Richie who sounds better than Def Leppard). It’s like driving a Swedish lounge suite. Very classy. By pure coincidence turns out that it was the Volvo that RDU gave away as a prize back in February 2009. Freaky.
