As the RDUnit goes live to air it’s only reasonable to point out that the latest scientific research seems to conclusively prove that listening to radio makes you happier.

We’ll gloss over the fact that this particularly survey was carried out by the vested interests of the Radio Advertising Board in the UK and, instead, put the theory to the test later today when The Joint is back on air at Midday NZ time.

So expect a non-stop cavalcade of uptempo pop hits featuring 30 minute Shit & Shine tracks, lives sets from Kylie Minoise and the new single from Your Cunting Daughter Fucks – all designed to “stimulate positive engagement levels within the brain”.

#1 in 1996, 10 OClock Live in 2011

We’re still fine tuning our R18 Vintage Cuts banned records special and, to be honest, it’s getting difficult to pin down what exactly constitutes a ban on a record.

If you’re a member of Anal Cunt playing grindcore to an audience of 50 people in West Newton, Massachusetts, you can’t exactly claim your new limited edition split 7″ single on Stinky Horse Fuck records has been banned just because the Clear Channel won’t put it on the playlist.

Add in the fact that media outlets very rarely officially “ban” songs these days, they just ignore them or advise presenters against playing them at certain times of the day, and we’re entering very murky waters indeed.

Whilst we continue to sift through the semantics of censorship we will take the easy option leave you with the countdown from #25 to #1 from John Peel’s Festive Fifty from 1996.

As is always the case with these old radio shows the quality is not always the highest – they’ve been ripped from cassettes, they have crude edits when the tape has had to be flipped over and songs have been dubbed in from other sources when someone forgot to do the flipping and missed a track – but the same could be said of a normal episode of The Joint.

When it came to putting together our own original mix of music this week, time was thin on the ground. Hey, those post-earthquake chemical toilets don’t assemble and empty themselves you know.

Instead, we’ve crudely bolted together two unedited sets of other people’s work. Extracts have been played on past episodes of The Joint but here, in their full glory, are the Zilla & Buddy Peace “A Friendly Game Of Chess” mix CD from 2003 and last year’s “South Yorks Vol 1″ promo by Kid Acne & DJ Slick Dixxx.

The Remix Circle Jerk

We’re using the continued lack of entry to the RDU studio to piece together some mixes from ideas we’ve had over the years.

One of them was to try and construct a show of nothing but remixes that were all linked together. Every act had to appear in the playlist twice, both in the guise of remixer and of original artist, with these tracks following each other in the running order. The aim was to finish the show with a remix from a band that started the whole programme off.

To be honest, having to describe the premise is hard and does make the whole project sound awful, but we have managed to piece 80 minutes worth of music that does adhere to the basic principles.

It’s called the Remix Circle Jerk because it is a series of remixes that come full circle and, let’s be frank, it is also an exercise in wanking off.

The Joint (Slight Return)

The RDU studio, along with many other buildings in Christchurch, is still out of bounds following the earthquake on the 22nd February.

In the meantime the hosts of your favourite shows are dialling it in (if you’ll pardon the expression). By that we mean people are putting together mixes at home and supplying them to the station to be scheduled to play in their usual timeslots.

Via some magic we don’t pretend to understand – allegedly it involves a laptop, a transmitter and, quite possibly, tin cans and string – RDU therefore continues to broadcast.

So, in that same spirit we present what we’re calling the Hostless ADHD Mix. Think of it as pure, concentrated Joint – more songs in 60 minutes than we normally fit into a three hour show. Download it below or listen to it live on RDU 98.5FM on Saturday 26th March at midday (New Zealand Time).

More damage at The Joint Mansions

On Tuesday 21 February 2011 at 12.51pm a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch and Lyttelton.

Many lives have been lost (147 at last count), the damage is widespread, and many people still have no power and water.

This is much, much worse than the 4 September 2010 earthquake.

Our thoughts go out to those who have lost loved ones, family, friends and colleagues. We can’t imagine what you must be going through.
