The show: How to melt vinyl records

Sheesh. A bit hot in the RDUnit (the mobile RDU studio) today because the angle of the late spring sun is now perfect for getting through the RDUnit bubble roof and melting the mixer and turntables. Here’s a safe and informative way to experience melting vinyl records…

The show: Be kind, rewind.

Rewinds galore today. We’re going back to the 1960s Phil Spector wall of sound era via Wavves, back to 1993 for some good ol’ stoner hip hop and some Hallelujah Picassos rewind / rerub / reissue  action, and afterthat – all over the place as usual.

Here’s that trippy Factory Floor video we were telling you about…

King Midas Sound dummy mix

Sorry. No show today due to other commitments.

Instead, for your listening pleasure allow us to recommend the King Midas Sound mix recently did for Dummy Magazine.

Put together by vocalist Kiki Hitomi, the mix is a very comforting and soothing yet dark and moody affair. Perfect for late night listening or gardening on a sunny day (the latter is for real – I’ve done it!).

The Show: Great moments in gaming history…

Hi. Fraserhead here. (That’s Mr Jose Gonzalez up above).

If you’re a regular listener you’ll know that I’m a sucker for a good soundtrack and music that sounds like a film score. However, I’ve usually overlooked game soundtracks. Myst nailed it back in the day with a perfect ambient soundtrack and most recently the Grand Theft Auto series innovated by including radio stations in the gameplay.

My lady friend, Tulip Black, has recently been playing Red Dead Redemption and that’s when I took notice of the soundtrack. It was written by Friends of Dean Martinez member Bill Elm and ex-member Woody Jackson. It’s fun just watching the game so that I can hear the soundtrack. Yeah, weird.

Anyway, one of the great moments in gaming history surely has to be a scene in Red Dead Redemption when the main character John Marston crosses the US border into “Nuevo Paraiso” (Mexico). That’s when, completely unexpectedly, the Jose Gonzalez track “Far Away” kicks in. Absolutely perfect. See the video for the action…

Erratum:
Did I really say that the Auckland Laneway Festival was happening in February? Oops. It’s 30 January 2012. Sorry about that. Anyway, check out that line up. It’s been years since I’ve got excited by a festival. Hopefully we’ll see some of you up there?
